New Gene Links High-fat Diet to Diabetes

An enzyme enabling pancreas cells to recognize glucose and secrete insulin is contained in a new gene identified by a research team at the University of California at San Diego.  A high fat diet restrains the gene from producing the enzyme. Mice not carrying the gene and eating a high fat diet eventually developed type 2 diabetes. In a university press release, Dr. Jarney D. Marth, the research leader, said, "Our findings suggest that the current human epidemic in type 2 diabetes may be a result of Gnt-4a enzyme deficiency."
