Being a caregiver for a patient with cancer is a demanding and stressful task. There are things you can do to make the job easier. 1). Maintain a Positive Attitude Your positive attitude will make a difference in all the relationships you have. Seek professional help if you need it. By keeping your spirits up, you will make a positive impact on the patient, and your job will seem easier because of your attitude. 2). Understand Your Strengths and Weaknesses You are a wonderful person, but you are not perfect. If you clearly understand your strengths and weaknesses, you can delegate tasks more efficiently and set boundaries for those around you. You will also be able to take time off when you need to do so. Taking time off is critical if you are to maintain your positive attitude. 3). Research What Help Is Available There are many private and governmental organizations to help you in your caretaking job. Some provide housekeepers; others provide respite care; and others will help you as an advocate to your patient's insurance company. Doing research to find the organizations best suited to help you will make a difference in your stress levels. 4). Create a Needs List You have discovered things you need in your caretaking job. What better way to get those things done or items than to distribute your needs list to family, friends and professionals in the healthcare field? 5). Communication with Patient and Others Clear communication with your patient will allow you to have an open relationship. Assure your patient that s/he will continue to have the final say in decisions relating to care and treatment. Good communication with family members and friends will help you maintain a trusting relationship with them. |
