Living With Cancer: Dealing With Hair Loss From Radiation or Chemotherapy

Hair loss is one of the unfortunate results of treating cancer with radiation or chemotherapy. There is no way to prevent losing your hair, but here are some tips that will help you make the best of the situation.

  • Keep your hair strong before treatment by not coloring, perming or bleaching it. Allow your hair to dry naturally instead of using a hair dryer. Avoid using hot rollers or curling irons.
  • You may wish to cut your hair short, because your hair loss will be less noticeable than if you keep your hair long. Also, if you shave your head completely, your head will not itch. Irritation will also decrease.
  • Decide what type of head covering you will use.
Wigs
  • Wigs made of human hair and/or handmade are more expensive than those made of synthetic hair. Human hair wigs can be styled with curling irons, but the maintenance of these wigs is more time-consuming.
  • Have a friend go with you and try on wigs of different lengths and styles.
  • You can get free hair and beauty makeovers through the program "Look Good…Feel Better." The program will style your wig if it is not prestyled. Check with the American Cancer Society office in your hometown to find out more about the program.
Other Head Coverings
  • You may wish to try one of many other head coverings, including scarves, hats, berets, sun hats, turbans, bandannas, or berets.

Don't feel that you must have a head covering. You may not want to wear a head covering when you are with your close friends or family. Use the most comfortable option for you.
